Frontline Initiative: A Quarterly Newsletter of the Alliance for Direct Support Professionals.

This newsletter is dedicated to promoting the interests of Direct Support Professionals by encouraging a

better trained, more respected, and more involved workforce. Frontline Initiative is a project of the

National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals and is published by the Research and Training Center

on Community Living at the University of Minnesota's Institute on Community Integration. Cost of one

IMPACT.

A quarterly newsletter containing in-depth articles on research, practices, philosophies, and trends in

specific focus areas related to persons with developmental disabilities. Provides practical information

Policy Research Brief.

A Summary of research on policy issues affecting persons with developmental disabilities. Each issue summarizes research in a different subject area and presents findings in a concise format especially useful

to policyrnakers, educators, college students, and researchers. Available issues summarize studies on the following topics:

.Training Issues for Direct Service Personnel Working in Community Residential Programs for

New Employee Orientation Modules for Programs Serving Persons with Developmental Disabilities

(1997).

 This curriculum is a competency-based orientation and training program for direct support professionals. I. Each of the seventeen, self-paced learning modules has a competency-based checklist for on-site

DOL Partnerships for Success Recruitment and Retention Toolkit (2001)

 

Resources for frontline supervisors, agency administrators and human resources personnel to assess recruitment    and retention outcomes and develop recruitment and retention interventions. Materials include a state workforce development plan, a DSP job analysis, realistic job preview overview, sample structured interview questions, a new staff survey, survey of current employees, exit questionnaire, guidelines for assessing retention outcomes and an annual DSP turnover and vacancy rate worksheet. Helping Hand: An Introductory Video to a Career in Direct Service (1996).

A video that provides a realistic industry preview for direct support professionals supporting people with disabilities in a wide variety of settings. This video portrays both the enjoyable and the difficult features of a career supporting people with disabilities. This video is designed for parents, provider agencies, and educational institutions that recruit potential direct support workers. (30 minutes; 1/2" VHS) Cost: $30.00.

The MN Frontline Supervisor Competencies & Performance Indicators: A Tool for Agencies Providing Community Services (1998).

This tool identifies 14 broad competencies with related competency statements and performance indicators required of frontline supervisors providing community support services to people with developmental disabilities. This information was gathered through a comprehensive job analysis conducted in the state of MN. It is useful in reviewing, revising, or creating accurate job descriptions for FLS, as well as identifying areas for training and professional development. Cost: $8.00.

Friends, Neighbors, and Co-Workers: Learning about Supporting People with Disabilities

This interactive CD-ROM provides an introduction to supporting people with developmental disabilities.

It includes profiles of several individuals with developmental disabilities as they talk about and reflect on their lives. The content includes pictures and voices of people with DD, interactive exercises, an option

for including agency policies, procedures and a welcome, training record tracking, and self-paced text. Cost: Call for information.
